Thorn in the side of the rulers: Oscar Romero (1917-1980)

An inconvenient fighter for justice

Although he was originally theologically and politically conservative orientated, Oscar Romero performed a radical change after his appointment as archbishop. More and more he became the voice of the poor and disenfranchised of his home country. That is why rightist circles let him assassinate by a killer on 24th of March 1980. The assassination of Oscar Romero kicked off a civil war in El Salvador which took 75,000 lives and was only put to an end by peace agreements in 1992.
